Cosplay Myths - BUSTED part 1

^There's a LOT of misconceptions about cosplay.
I personally believe that being misinformed or lack of understanding about something leads to confusion and sometimes even conflict.
There are probably some people out there that are interested in cosplaying but are hindered because of these misconceptions.
So for the benefit of every one out there, I am gonna bust some cosplay myths. Hehehheheeh
The truth will set you free and all that. XD Hahahahah
I hope these will encourage people to not easily judge and just enjoy the hobby as it is.

With out further ado...

~Myth # 1: YOU MUST JOIN A COSPLAY COMPETITION TO BE CONSIDERED A COSPLAYER.

This is NOT true. As long as you have the costume down (meaning the right costume, wig, contacts lens, props and shoes) and you give a convincing portrayal of your chosen character then you are already good.

It all goes back to the word COSPLAY which came from the words COSTUME and (ROLE) PLAY.

~Myth # 2: YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN COSTUMES, STYLE YOUR OWN WIG and MAKE YOU OWN PROPS TO BE A COSPLAYER.

This myth probably started from the fact that in most international cosplay competitions, participants are required to make at least 75 percent or the whole costume by themselves. Yes, that is true. BUT again, you don't have to join a cosplay competition to be considered a cosplayer.

There are a lot of cosplayers who make their own costumes but not all of them join competitions. At the same time there are a lot of cosplayers who also do NOT make their own costumes. It is perfectly alright to commission or have other people make your costumes. I admire people who can sew and make their own costumes, the thing is not every one has the same skills. At the end of the day, the end product is what matters. If you want to cosplay for the sheer love of it then where ever you got that costume wouldn't matter anymore. ^^

Well, unless you plan to join a cosplay competition and the rules clearly say that you need to make your own costumes then better learn how. hehehheheh
Always check the rules.

~Myth # 3: ALL COSPLAYERS ARE RICH.

Yes, wigs are expensive. Yes, contact lens can also be expensive. Yes, customized shoes are expensive. Yes, props can be expensive. Yes, cloth and having it made into costumes can also be expensive.
Yes, make up can be expensive. All of these things make for a good costume / cosplay. With all these things that you need to prepare for a cosplay, you really do have to spend money.

I am actually really wondering why people assume that cosplayers are rich when most are students.

Students who happen to really save up for their cosplays.

My Tifa Lockheart cosplay, an intermission for your eyes ^^

But just because a person cosplays, it doesn't automatically mean that he/she is rich.
Well, some cosplayers come from families that are really well off but not everyone.
It is best not to generalize.

Lots of money is NOT always equal to good cosplay.

I will end my blog here for now because my hands got tired . Hehehehehhehe
But I do hope that this has cleared some of your misconceptions on cosplay.
More soon. When I am not to lazy to type hahahahahah
When I have the time. XD

Oh and if I have offended some people, I do apologize.
This blog entry was not intended to hurt anyone but only to inform.

  3. people tend to forget about the roleplay part and focus solely on the costumes. if you can't project or don't know the character, you're not a cosplayer. just a person in costume.
